G.I. Gurdjieff, The Rascal Saint

## Origins

He died in 1949, has been one of the most influential teachers in the 20th century. He has had a great impact on the spiritual thought.

- He grew up in pastoral conditions and there was a great deal of folklore circulating along. His father used to recite a song as a bard, mostly about Gilgamesh.
- This song was passed down orally for probably 4000 years.

## Searching for truths

He came across a very mystical brotherhood of Sufism from Afghanistan.

Just around the outbreak of the first world war, he started collecting a group of students in Moscow. One of them later perpetuated his work. One of his students was Ouspensky, a mathematician and philosopher.

## Waking us up from the sleep

- The idea that we are in our normal circumstances asleep. And he went on to say that this is not natural sleep, it's a hypnotic stuber.
- There are many implications to this idea, but there are various truths to it.
- To some degree or another, we are asleep. And going out of this sleep was Gurdjieff's main objectives.
- He has a sequence of elaborate dance postures to develop a finer grade of attention. His work with attention is probably the central theme of his work.
- His philosophy has practical and philosophical implications.
- He talks about the three brains. Imagine this carriage, which is beat up and neglected. The horse is starved and abused. The driver is drunk. And the master isnt even there. The carriage corresponds to the body. The horse corresponds to the soul and the emotions. The driver is the mind. The master, who is this master who isnt there?

## Origins

- He insists that people took part in the 'toast of the idiots'. He had an elaborate ritual. The square idiot. etc.
- One of the parts of esoteric science, the type. The sun sign, the moon sign etc which is key to central nature.
- Let's go back to the idea that we are all asleep. We dont remember ourselves.
- There are three centers: mind, emotions and body. And the fact that the master is not even there. That we are wandering around in a hypnotic stupor.
- Most of our work is very mechanical. It goes on without us. We cant even stop it. (Bicameral Mind)
- Sleep of man (consciousness is different from being sensitive)


## Experiments

- Are you aware of the sensation of my feet while you are talking. Can you divide the attention when you talk, and parallely remember the sensation of the feet.
- We are not even aware of our bodies on a moment by moment basis.
- Practise called Self-Remembering, many different aspects and many different forms.
- Sleep of man.
- Exercise of Alarm clocks. The problem of waking up is to get used to alarm clocks, and waking up to those alarm clocks. All of those were designed for self-remembering. So that mind, body and emotions are more closer to each other. At some point of contact, that you can also feel the feet of the floor.
- Being aware of being aware of these emotions.

Being aware of being aware seems to create a little distance from all of these things.

Part of the problem which we have is identification. You identify with those thoughts. Attention shifts in random ways.

When you look at the window, you dont go out of the window. Takes a little effort to feel as if you are sitting here. And not there. Greater connection between mind, emotions and body.

And slowly, the master begins to slow up. Master is the real 'I' as Gurdjieff calls it.

The I is not so unified. We are all a victim of multiple personality disorders. We are different for family, children, work, and even small personalities.

Jerry Seinfeld, night guy - tomorrow I am going to wake up at 6 am. Day guy, doesnt have the attention.

One eye wants to quit smoking, the other guy doesnt want to do that. It's cultivated by this finer sense of attention.

Little by little draw everything together.

## Psychic movements

In order to cultivate these movements, we need to have enlightened attention.
So that we can step behind all the distractions.

Servant who, the master is away, started beating up all the other servants. If the master comes home, increased awareness. There are many different aspects of it.

Self remembering and self observations.

The institute of harmonious development of man. Bringing all these together.

## Attention spans are short

It's funny to see others attention spans versus how our own attention span is different. So thats one aspect of Gurdjieff's teachings.

He had a very elaborate view. He believed that the astral body, feelings circulating around the philosophical body.

Usually when we are young, we are time billionaires. We have loads and loads of time, but not enough moeny.

## Practical tips

### Investing money

- Please dont try to save too much. Never sacrifice fun experiences. It is a big percentage of your monthly income use it for fun experiences. We shouldnt save too much as teenagers.
- As we get older, our happiness from spending that money decreases over the period of time.
- Try an open an investment account. And make that separate from savings account. Both of these accounts should be separate.
- In US and UK, you need to be more than 18 to invest money.

### Index Funds

- If you are investing in index funds, you are investing in the top 50/500 stocks.
- The point is that it will compound, but it would be negligible. It gets into your investor mindset. Chuck it into the investment fund. 
- Also invest a little bit of our money into crypto.

內心情感與自我預期相等的，因為付出努力得到結果與預期相符，就能自洽。
「比較」永遠得不到滿足，認可自己的的檢核點放錯位置，慣於依賴外在結果檢核自己，無法達到預期結果時，情感上就無法圓滿。

我們並非單細胞生物，看待事物的角度卻過於單一，從多角度、層面認知看待自己，結果或許沒有達到預期，但轉念想依舊收穫了些許甚麼?若凡事鑽牛角尖非透過某結果才能證明自己，那就無法獲得快樂與自信。

人生不如意十之八九，若自我內心沒有原則、標準，就只會一昧依賴、參考外界標準，等同於沒有主見鼻子被牽著走。

若只能被迫隨著變化大的外界標準做事，不僅是沒有標準也必然導致辛苦。

內心有錨定和堅持之物，即可更加坦然接納人生更多多樣性。
工作不已升職為唯一目地，用愛投入並享受其中，享受與自己工作、相處的過程，那瞬間有如戀愛，不計較他人眼光，去給予而不求能否得到超值的回報。
